Personal Statement

These prompts are for my major application to get in to a business school. This is my third try attempting to get in, I’ve been denied the past two times. I thought by getting help in my personal statement, it could make a difference. I’ve given my personal scenarios for each prompt and I hope you can create a storyline around it.

Please write about 250 words for each prompt.

Prompts:

1. Describe any personal or economic hardship/barriers you have experienced and/or are experiencing. Explain how the hardship/barriers directly affected your ability to be successful in your college academics. As hardships/barriers may occur throughout your life, be specific about when you encountered these hardship/barriers, how long they lasted, and how they impact your academic record.

For this prompt, I want to elaborate the reasons why my GPA has dropped for the past 2 quarters. Don’t say the numbers, but as an example for you, I used to get 4.0 in my class when I was in my old college (Edmonds Community College) and my overall gPA was 3.83, but since I transferred to University of Washington, I’ve been getting different ranges of grades from 2.0 – 4.0 and now my overall grade is 3.0.

I don’t really have a reason why my grades dropped, in all honesty the class works are just harder. But don’t say that..

2. Describe 1-2 experiences that demonstrate your leadership within a group or organization outside of class. Please do not use examples from high school unless you have completed high school within the past 18 months or your leadership involvement from high school continues today. Examples could be taken from: employment, community service, family responsibilities, student organizations, or similar situations. Explain what you learned about yourself through the experience(s).

In the past, I was a part of the Student Government in Edmonds Community College positioned as the Communication Assistant being put in charge of all marketing means of the transparency of the student government. I’m also currently part of a Seattle-based student non-profit organization appointed by the Indonesian government entitling the position of Head of Marketing. Please elaborate on ways I could demonstrate leadership skills.

Example below is what I used for my cover letter:

Having intended several experiences as a student government in my previous community college, I was positioned as the Communication Assistant being put in charge of all marketing means of the transparency of the student government. I oversaw every social media (Instagram, Facebook, Twitter) marketing campaigns by maintaining, updating, and expanding content on the platforms, manage the student government portal in the college’s website, designs posters and related correspondence using Adobe and Canva, and managing admission events and other campus events. Not only is social media my expertise, I handled all marketing team in leading its vision and design and manage merchandise for student government.

I’m also part of a Seattle-based student non-profit organization appointed by the Indonesian government entitling the position of Head of Marketing. My team management skills and innovative marketing strategies helped bring over $10K of fundraising earnings to finance our programs and agendas. With a united vision in mind of uniting the Indonesian population who are living in the Greater Seattle Area and to become representatives of the rich Indonesian culture in the United States, it is essential to bring our name to every corner possible thus I was able to utilize my web authoring and communication skills to assist with such goals.

Those obviously don’t explain any leadership skills, but maybe take bit of examples and demonstrate how I could achieve leadership skills.
