Labour in a Global and Comparative Perspective

Potential question:
What are the impacts of globalization on workers with regard to migration and citizenship specifically? [Note: You can focus on a specific group of workers if you want.] In what ways does globalization encourage or discourage labour migration? How does the mobility of labour, of workers, compare to the mobility of capital, of trans-national corporations? What are the relationships between labour migration and citizenship? Why has immigration become such a hot-button issue in the last few years and what kind of politics does this inspire? Why has nationalism emerged as a significant political issue? What are possible solutions for the conflicts between globalization, labour migration, and citizenship?

You should offer a thesis statement; a detailed explanation of the major issues relevant to your theme; offer a critical analysis of the sources you have selected, including commentary on whether or not their arguments are convincing; relate your chosen sources and topic to the general themes and concepts of the course; and, explain how they address current social problems and debates. In your critical analysis, you may agree or disagree with the readings, but you must offer evidence for your arguments.

Your research essay can cite course readings, but you must also use at least two peer-reviewed social science sources that are not course readings. You can also bring in other forms of relevant media, including newspapers, broadcasts, etc.

Course Discussion with two questions

Please respond to this week’s screenings, readings, and lecture materials in an organized post that cites specific details from the programs and articles under discussion. You do not have to talk about all the texts for this week but should actively engage Michele Hilmes’ chapter from Radio Voices and at least one (1) screening (Empire of the Air or War of the Worlds) – please write about the texts that you find most interesting or compelling. Below are a few questions that you may choose to address (though you are welcome to reply in any way that makes sense and about other topics not posed here):

1:How do Michele Hilmes (“How Far Can You Hear?”) and Ken Burns (Empire of the Air) differ in their historical accounts of early radio’s development? How does each author or filmmaker define “important” figures and/or developments in relation to the new medium/technology? What overlaps and/or contradictions do you see in these narratives?
2: How does War of the Worlds reflect or play upon the social/cultural fears and anxieties that Hilmes discusses in relation to early radio? What specific devices does the broadcast employ to convey mood/tone and what other radio genres does Orson Welles/Mercury Theatre on the Air rely on to construct the program?
