An effective critical essay is one that presents the writer’s position in a thoughtful manner on various debatable issues or ideas. The overall objective is to persuade the reader that your position has merit or opposing positions that you explain and debunk. It is essential to take into consideration anticipated rebuttals or contrary positions and to refute, mitigate or take these into thought in a convincing manner. Relevant examples, principles and historical precedence are essential elements of a critical essay because it brings the various aspects of an issue into focus for the readers who can then decide for themselves about the relative merits of various positions
