Sapir-Whorf Hypothesis Theory

This is the A+CE Signature Assignment. Research the Sapir-Whorf Hypothesis theory and write a 4-8 page paper explaining the theory, giving examples/applications of the theory, and implications that this theory has in everyday life. Link the Sapir-Whorf Hypothesis theory with a current community issue (examples include homeless, healthcare/insurance, police brutality, terrorism). Include information as to why you believe this theory can best be linked to this particular community issue. Students will research and write a paper about the Sapir-Whorf Hypothesis theory discussed in the class, resulting in a 4-8 page paper. To be successful, students must apply the chosen theory to a community issue and consider different perspectives or solutions. What are the limitations of studying this issue, with respect to the theory that you have linked to it? It is expected that students will utilize at least five sources in addition to the course textbook. You must include a works cited page. MLA or APA format is permitted. Evaluation will be based on organization, depth of analysis, grammar, sentence syntax, and referencing your sources.

BOOK RESEARCH

CRITICAL COMPARATIVE BOOK REVIEW

Object: This assignment is designed to introduce and cultivate critical reading and thinking skills, develop information literacy, and engage students in the academic writing process.

Assignment:
Pick a person of interest, within the bounds of the course, and read two biographies of that person (at least 150 pgs each). After reading each biography, write a critical review of the two books of 5-7 typed, double-spaced pages. In addition to evaluating each book for its own merits, you will also compare and contrast the two books.

These are to be CRITICAL book reviews, meaning that you will need to analyze each book carefully, and then weigh them against each other. Among the questions you should consider are:

Why did the author of each book choose to write a biography of this person?
What was the purpose of each book? Does the author state a purpose?
What are the main arguments of each book?
What is the thesis?
Would you characterize each biography as sympathetic to the subject or critical?
Are you convinced by the arguments/thesis of each author?
What are the strengths and weaknesses of each book?
Can you discern a bias in the authors’ work?

Which author does a better job explaining the life of the subject? Why?
How do the authors arguments compare?
Which author presents a more compelling or believable thesis?
Does it seem that the authors are purposing seeking to undermine the argument of the other?
If one of the biographies is written many years before the other, can you identify how historical events have shaped/changed the interpretation of the subject’s life as reflected in the other biography?

Do not treat the above questions as a checklist. I expect a proper academic paper, not a list of questions and answers!

Critical comparative book review assignment (cont’d)

These are just some of the questions to consider in your papers. The bottom line is that you are expected to engage the materials and ask why each author presents the life of the subject the way they do. All authors have an agenda. Part of your job, will be to find out as much about the authors as possible. This, in turn, will help inform your judgment when you begin trying to figure out each author’s angle.

You will also need to research some background of the era in which your subject lived. Getting a little background will also help you to discern an author’s interpretation. So, for example, if you were doing George Washington, you would want to read a little about the era of the Revolutionary War – just to get some of the basics of events and chronology. For this you might make use of encyclopedia articles or other reference sources that are reliable. DO NOT USE WIKIPEDIA!

ALL BOOKS MUST BE APPROVED BY THE INSTRUCTOR IN ADVANCE.

Completed papers will be handed in near the end of the semester, according to the due date on the syllabus. The papers must include in text citations and a bibliography at the end in Chicago style. Late papers will be heavily penalized (a full letter grade).

Use the resources that are available to you: the instructor, the library, the Writing Tutors!

Be warned: Plagiarism is a violation of college policy on academic dishonesty and will be subject to one or all of the following: failure of the assignment, failure of the class, suspension – or even expulsion – from the college.

HOW HARD IS IT TO FOLLOW THE INSTRUCTIONS. READ THE BELOW AND FOLLOW THE INSTRUCTIONS. NO COVER SHEET, NO ABTRACT. Use the updated APA 7. The book must be one of the citations.

Theresa is a 19 year old college sophomore who is unsure of her major and unsure what she might do after she graduates. Her parents, Polish immigrants, are both engineers, and she has an older brother who is in medical school, but she has little interest in science. When she was in elementary school, she wanted to be an actor and a model. in middle school, she thought she might like to be in the military or perhaps be a police officer. In high school, she became interested in broadcasting and politics. She had worked in a restaurant when she was in high school and could see herself managing a restaurant. Now that she is in college, she looks back at all of her interests and believes that all but being a model or actor are possible for her. She has recently sought counseling due to the fact that she finally came out as a lesbian and did not want her parents to find out, but now she is seeking counseling to see if she should pursue one of the careers she has thought about or possibly one she has not thought about.

Come up with a career counseling plan for Theresa, supporting your plan with a theoretical basis and addressing diversity issues.

The Yellow Wallpaper By Charlotte Perkins Gilman

I have to write a critical based on the short story “The Yellow Wallpaper” by Charlotte Perkins Gilman.
I have to state what theme I believe is shown in the short story and write 5 paragraphs providing reasoning for that. The first paragraph as the introduction where I state my thesis. The second third and fourth are for proof and evidence supporting my thesis. The 5th is the conclusion. The following is the checklist I have been provided with.
Editing Checklist

Font Times New Roman size 12
Your name, class, date is in the top right corner
You have a title that is a hint about what is to come
(the name of the assignment is a bad title)

Introduction
In your intro you have a TAG line (title author genre) for EACH work you are discussing
You use an author’s full name once, refer to them by their last name ever after
There should be one sentence for each body paragraph
There should be a clear thesis that is your MAIN IDEA for the paper

Body Paragraphs
Each body paragraph needs a quote or some sort of supporting evidence
End each body paragraph by showing how the ideas in it connect to your thesis
Remember, when you talk about the authors here, only use the last name

Conclusion
No new information – you’ve used your body paragraphs to make your argument
Outline what you have discussed
Remind me what your thesis is
If you can, make a connection to the broader world (not necessary just helpful)
Leave the reader with something to think about (but don’t get hung up here)

Editing
Run a spelling and grammar check
Make sure all names have capital letters
All shorter texts are “in quotes” and all longer texts are in italics

Written Response Assignments

So there will be 2 different written responses corresponding to the questions being asked.
Please make sure to listen to the song
Bruce Springsteen’s “Born in the USA” which is linked in the question where it says “listen to the song”. There you will be able to listen to that particular song. At the same time, observing and having an understanding of the lyrics.
All questions are listed on the uploaded file below.

Note: On the first written question, it is also asking if something like that of that song played out at the concert I to went see.
(which was the online concert on Facebook, you viewed and worked on last time, the previous assignment). If you could answer that specific question too and all that it is also asking regarding Springsteen in written response 1.
As a whole, I’d appreciate following the instructions as stated in the file. Thank you in advance!
