Discussion Questions:
1) Why is accurate media representation so important? Discuss some of the impacts on domestic nondominant groups as a result of media that is not an accurate representation.
2) What is at stake if media representation doesn’t change? Discuss some of the effects on the U.S. and countries around the world as a result of media that is not an accurate representation of our reality.
3) What are some of the roadblocks contributing to inequality in the media? In other words, why might some directors, producers, and actors hesitate to produce media that reflects reality?
4) Pulling from the materials, summarize the steps that were mentioned to change representation in the media. Which one do you think is most realistic and why?
5) What are some things we can do to a) avoid picking up biases and prejudices from the media and b) minimize the negative impact?
6) Do you think it’s important that researchers “measure” the dimensions of national cultures, such as Hofstede’s work (all measures are relative to how other cultures rank)? What are some pros and cons to identifying the values and tendencies of a culture?
7) Do you think it’s important to know about your country’s own values as outlined in Kohls’s article and how your own country scores on Hofstede’s Value Orientation index? Why or why not? Explain and give concrete examples to support your point.
8) Robert Kohls’s list of values was written in 1984. Which of the values on Kohls’s list do you think are changing or have changed since then? Explain why and give examples.
9) Explain cultural relativism and ethnocentrism. Is there ever a time when it might be appropriate to be ethnocentric and believe a culture should change its ways? Please explain.
10) Kohls mentions that “Americans see all of these values as very positive ones.” Do you agree? Explain. Are there any values listed that you think Americans now or are starting to view as negative (this article was written over 30 years ago)? Please provide examples and mention why.
