– Essay-style questions are more open-ended; that is, they usually consider broader issues and content delivered in the course. You do not want to be vague in your answers, so use specific examples wherever possible to support your statements. This section is different from the first in that you want to communicate to me that you have a good understanding of the themes and issues discussed in the course.
You should prepare your essay by putting together a brief outline, which will help give your answer organization and allow you to best gather and arrange your ideas and examples. Further organize and express your answer using complete sentences and paragraphs. Each essay should begin with an introduction that clearly indicates which question you are answering and how you will answer it, that is, what are the main points you will discuss through the remainder of the essay. The body of the essay should contain your discussion of these points, with detailed examples selected from the relevant readings to support your statements. An essay should end with a conclusion, whereby you summarize your main points. While formal citations (footnotes) are not required, it is always a good idea to indicate where information comes from, for example: “Sneath describes this term as….”
