Each student will write and upload a reaction paper prior to each class. The papers will focus on the readings assigned for that specific class period. There is no minimum or maximum page length requirement, but around 2 pages should suffice. This is NOT a summary of the readings, nor should you simply relate the readings to your personal experience. Instead, critically examine the paper(s) or chapter(s). What is missing from a study or its line of argument? What questions or possible explanations does the reading ignore? How tenable are the assumptions? Do the methods and data support the conclusions drawn? You might also compare and contrast the assigned articles and highlight areas where they may diverge or conflict with one another. You could also explore how relevant (or irrelevant) the reading is to your career (Active Army) etc
An A paper is exciting to read, accommodates itself well to the intended question or outline, and presents evidence that is sufficiently detailed, persuasive, and, where appropriate, original. The problem is clearly stated with sufficient content presented in support of the position taken, the reasoning being thoughtful with the argument conveying unusual insight into the problem. The organization of the paper is logical and consistent with the stated problem. Paragraphs are fully developed and follow naturally from what precedes them; the conclusions reinforce the reader’s confidence in the writer’s control of the argument. The style of the prose is articulate and flows without being overly cumbersome. The paper contains few grammatical errors, none of which undermines the overall effectiveness of the argument. Finally, the paper is well researched and cites sources appropriately. Grades are lowered accordingly for performance that falls short of these standards.
