Introduction
The popular media, especially the film industry, portrays significant issues in criminal justice in many ways. However, are these depictions realistic or dramatized? How might these depictions affect your personal understanding and expectation of criminal justice careers, settings, and responsibilities?
Activity Instructions
For this activity, you will choose and watch a criminal justice depiction on TV, film, or other media. You will then write a reaction paper that analyzes your experience. A reaction paper is a summary and intellectual analysis on a particular item. In this context, your reaction paper should apply to a relevant topic in this course. For example, you will explore the topic of jury decision making and jury size. The film 12 Angry Men explores this topic in a dramatic way.
Your reaction paper should:
Compare and contrast how the media portrayals realistic vs. real-world experiences.
Discuss the role and responsibility of the media in creating an accurate depiction of the criminal justice field.
Discuss how this depiction supports or negates your impressions of this field.
Explore whether this depiction is useful, good, or not.
Reflect on why is this experience is important.
