Food taboos: just like with social taboos, what we think is “good” food also varies in different cultures and in different times

Generally, like with social taboos, we see 2 categories of food taboos: the taboos that change with time: like with the social taboo on cigarettes, some foods were considered “good” and healthy in the past, but we now think they are “bad” and unhealthy or, like with the social taboo on marijuana, some foods were seen as “bad” or undesirable in the past, but are now seen as “good” and healthy. The taboos that don’t change: food that is accepted and even desired in one culture, but is perceived as repulsive and will not be eaten in other cultures. The title of our course is reading anthropology between the lines which means interpreting what is “between the lines” (not what is obvious, written, announced, etc.) our focus is anthropology at home so this should be, above all, what can be uncovered from your own personal observations, experiences, surroundings, etc. – above all, look at and take apart your home culture (read kate fox), but you may also draw from your travels elsewhere (including here in poland)
comparison is not necessary, though it often helps to better see into your own culture – if looking at other cultures, ask yourself why certain aspects seems “strange” to “us” and not to “them” (and vice versa!)
our focus is not on the superficial, official, and legal social order – our focus is on actual social practices: what do we actually do in everyday, ordinary, daily life? how do we behave, react, communicate, etc. in real life? take a “microscopic” look into your culture(s) – provide precise details (what clifford geertz calls “thick description”) for each case, for each example – fully and clearly illustrate each case you analyze look for various factors (there is never just one and it is usually not the most obvious one) that might explain why we do certain things and why we do them a certain way – look for similarities in humanity (not just differences) – try to group your observations into broader categories of human cultures (e.g., general disgust at body fluids outside the body, sections in newspapers, types of behavior on the road, etc.) and remember that the aim is not to “judge” one way as better or worse, but to observe and enjoy the variety of ways that human beings create their culture – try to figure out what lies underneath, try to read the tiny print between the lines
