Prompt:
Select ONE prompt below.
How did the 1930s and 1940s offer opportunities of change for women? To what extent was that change sustainable? Consider the culture of the 1950s.
This is a large topic. You will need to narrow your focus to a specific group of women, and trace their experiences across the decades, evaluating progress and limitations.
HINT: To effectively answer this prompt, you must define and evaluate the change by discussing before and after examples. A strong paper will analyze the sustainability of the change by including examples from the 1950s – comparing and contrasting examples from the 1950s with the earlier decades.
By the end of the 1950s, what did it mean to be a woman, wife, feminist?
Make sure you discuss the influence of race and class on these terms.
HINT: To effectively answer this prompt, narrow your focus to a specific type of female. Defined by race and/or class. You may even compare two different groups. For example, white middle class women with Japanese American women.
To what extent has gender both limited and expanded women’s opportunities. Evaluate two time periods that we have covered to date. One must from Unit 2. When appropriate examine the influence of class and race.
HINT: A strong paper will include a comparison that evaluates limitations and/or expansion. Remember to narrow your focus. Select a time period and a specific topic within that time period, then compare/contrast it with a different time period and specific topic.
