The goal of the third deliverable is to give you an opportunity to think through a company’s corporate level strategy (Chapter 8) while giving you an opportunity to further refine your company and industry level analysis skills based on the feedback you received from the second assignment. Accordingly, the third deliverable is to identify a growth strategy for your company. Your growth strategy should consist of
– identify an industry that that is attractive (you need to substantiate this attractiveness using the tools from Chapter 3) into which your focal company should diversify
– identifying and justifying your choice of a corporate level diversification strategy (see Chapter 8). You should choose either a Related Diversification Strategy or an Unrelated Diversification strategy
– identify and justify an entry mode (Acquisition of an existing business, Internal Development, Partnering (Joint Venture or Alliance).
– If you choose acquisition or partnering you need to apply the tools from Chapter 4 to demonstrate that the company is a strong one.
– If you have chosen a Related Diversification strategy for number 2 you will want to identify potential cross-business strategic fits along the value chain. If you choose an unrelated strategy you need to discuss the resource fits.
Your application of the Chapter 3 and 4 will be graded in a manner similar to the rubric used in the previous assignment. For the Chapter 8 material there will be sections added on whether you identified an appropriate diversification strategy and provided compelling justification, an if sufficiently evaluated the appropriate fit (resource or value chain) based on the diversification strategy you chose.
The purpose of the assignment is to persuade upper level management in the focal company to act upon the diversification strategy and entry mode you have chosen. You will need to leverage evidence from your analyses to provide convincing logic based on compelling evidence to substantiate your choice. Your recommendations section should focus on presenting and justifying your growth strategy and your analyses should go into appendices.
