ethical concerns in archaeology

During the last 20 years, ethical concerns have become one of the most important topics in archaeological research. In fact, archaeologists’ original focus on the scientific study of the past (and the preservation of the archaeological record) has been largely transcended. In a context marked by globalization, multiculturalism, and global warming, archaeologists are increasingly involved with current communities, social stresses, debates about ethical obligations, and political disagreements. In this essay, students are invited to reflect on some of these important questions.

The essay will be based on the reading of the two papers below. Papers will be available at the D2L component site of the course.

Shepherd, N. 2007. What Does It Mean ‘To Give the Past Back to the People’? Archaeology and Ethics in the Postcolony. In Y. Hamilakis; P. Duke (eds). Archaeology and Capitalism: From Ethics to Politics. Left Coast Press, Walnut Creek: 99-114
Burström, M.; Gelderblom, B. 2011. Dealing with difficult heritage: The case of Bückeberg, site of the Third Reich Harvest Festival. Journal of Social Archaeology, 11 (3): 266- 282.

You are invited to submit a 1-page paper essay (single spaced) on the following three questions:

What are the main differences between the early colonial burial ground (Green Point) in central Cape Town, South Africa, and the site of Bückeberg? You can illustrate your ideas with quotations and examples from the papers (5 points).

How do the differences between these two sites impact current discussions about their memorialization? (5 points).

What do you think it should be done with the sites of Green Point and Bückeberg? (5 points).

Please do not include bibliography. Concerning quotations from the papers under discussion, please refer in your answer to the author’s name and year of publication followed by the page number. For instance: (Shepherd 2007: 7).

Each of your three answers is worth 8 points. You will be marked on:

The content of your answer (3 points).
The style and the clarity of your answer (3 points).
The excellence (that is, originality and virtuosity) of your answer (2 points).
