Naturalistic observation is people watching. It shows how individuals’ behavior is affected by the presence of others. It would also be unethical to observe without consent, so obtrusive naturalistic observation is the only method that can be used with human subjects.
Naturalistic observation has some drawbacks, including the inability to control for variables and a lack of replicability (Vinney, 2019). Different observers may draw different conclusions from the same witnessed behavior. Two researchers might see the same actions yet attribute them to different causes.
Naturalistic observation is probably the best method around for the process of formulating new hypotheses. By becoming intimately familiar with subjects and their behavior, one can start to make hypotheses about them and their behavior. Those hypotheses can then be tested by other methods (Kardas, 2013).
