Little Red Riding Hood

Essay #3 will be written in two stages. When the two stages are combined, you will have one longer essay.

An example of the first part has been posted on CANVAS under Files titled “Little Red Riding Hood Essay (Example, but different)”. It is different because it does not respond to the exact prompt that you have been asked to respond to. In the case of the example, it answers whether or not the audience learned anything. In your case, you must answer if Little Red Riding Hood (LRRH) learned anything.

For the first part of the essay, you are to choose ONE of the LRRH stories in the literature book (not the additional versions) and focus on it. Ask yourselves, “Did she learn anything?” “What did she learn?” “How well did she learn?” “Is what she learned substantial?”

Your attention to the LRRH character may reveal that she is a very smart girl to begin with. If this is the case, she may not have needed to learn anything, but you must show her intelligence/confidence with textual evidence. Perhaps the LRRH character is very naive and innocent and has much to learn. What does she need to learn and does she by the end of the story? In this case, you must prove via textual evidence that she is naive and innocent. Please note that at the end of the Perrualt version, there is a “moral”. Even though this is intended for children, perhaps the fact that it is included implies the LRRH did not learn her lesson and is, therefore, an example to children of what not to do or visa versa.

In the Grimm’s version, a huntsman comes to the rescue, how does this play into whether she learns something or not. She also goes back to the grandmother’s house a second time in this story, so pay attention to LRRH when she embarks a second time for the grandmother’s house. Is she dynamic or static as a character? She she actually learned anything.

“The Company of Wolves” will seem very different. Here we have a very strong LRRH as she relates to the wolf(man). Afterall, she “tames” the wolf. Consider how this affects whether she learned anything or not or whether she needs to learn anything or not.

Move beyond the obvious: “She learned not to talk to strangers.” Consider obeying one’s parent, redeeming another being, sympathizing with another being, learning about one’s sexuality, etc…

Give this some careful thought, and come up with your thesis statement first. Then, come up with points to support this idea accompanied by textual evidence. Last, build the essay around this thesis and points. You are also required to use Orenstein in this essay. You can use a reference from this source int he first part or in the second part or both.

Thesis templates:

In Perrault’s “Little Red Riding Hood”, the little girl does/ does not learn anything.

In the Grimm Brothers’ tale “Little Red Cap”, the protagonist fails to learn a lesson.
