There are a few theories of psychology that have helped to develop the field of coaching. One theory is Cognitive Behavioral Theory (CBT) that has learning occur through a stimulus and response, and connections with thinking and choice, which determines behavior and understanding the meaning of events. In coaching, it would help clients understand their problem thinking and use reason and reality to modify their thinking and bring about helpful, productive, and balanced ways of living and acting. Another theory is Emotional Intelligence (EI) theory, which holds that intelligence is the capacity of the individual to act in right ways, think rationally, and deal in an effective way in their environment. In EI, a person would be able to monitor their own and other’s feelings and emotions, understand them, and use the information to use as a guide for their thinking and actions. In coaching, helping a person or leader understand their strengths and limitations so they can have more effectiveness in meaningful and authentic relating (Gloss, 2013).
There are similarities and differences between positive psychology and coaching. Some similarities are that both start with an understanding that people want to change their lives, both are not trying to act as therapy and recognize those with emotional or mental health conditions would do better in therapy, and both believe that people should be empowered to take control of their lives and work towards the life they want. They are different in that positive psychology has its own theories and principles used exclusively, life coaching is less structured where positive coaching uses specific resources, there is more research associated with positive psychology (Mead, 2020).
