Article Review Guidelines
A total of five (5) article reviews are required for this assignment.
Select and review two (2) articles from the Detailed Course Schedule. The required article
readings are important to your process to learn about essential issues related to the concepts and
practice of social media and to assist in the discussion of article readings in asynchronous
discussions in Canvas. While you are required to read all of the articles in the schedule, you will
select and review two of them for this part of Assignment #1.
Search, select, and review three (3) journal articles related to social media. (Articles can be
searched and selected from the list of Acceptable Journals and Conference Proceedings List for
Use in Assignments.) The types of articles you need to select for the reviews can ultimately
be used for Assignment #2, when you synthesize literature in your paper to support your
discussions. So consider carefully articles you select for this part of the assignment. Articles
for this part of Assignment #1 should be current (2017 to present).
Points were given on this assignment based on the following criteria: the choice of
articles (the relevance to the course), their technical and/or educational orientation, a clear
statement of the problem, depth of review, recommendations for future research, presentation
quality and APA accuracy.
Some tips on article review content.
An article review is supposed to help us understand what is happening in a particular topic area.
Each article as a separate entity offers a certain perspective to the topic. Other works are those
references cited in the original article and the new works that might have come after that you
found a newer source through your search. The literature forms the research space that is
occurring in that area. It is for the benefit of learning about the topic area through article reviews
that we begin to understand how studies relate different and sometimes similar perspectives to
the same topic area.
I do not expect a lengthy literature review for each article, but each review should be about two
pages. It is important to focus on the one article and really try to understand and explain what is
8
going on with that study and the approach taken by the researchers. Then, the citations already
given in the back of the article (References) may lead to understanding of other perspectives
going on in the research. You are not required to get deep into those citations, but simply select
one or two that may be potentially compelling to review in the future. List them as complete
citations at the end of each review (following APA format). You are not required to add
additional citations in your reviews, but if you have additional new source(s) that you have found
that relate to the topic, you have the option to cite the source(s).
Finally, the selection of articles for the article reviews should be done strategically so that you
can utilize them in the assignment #2 paper of choice. You then have a starting point for
literature integration in assignment #2.
Please follow these content requirements below:
Article Reviews Content Requirements
Each article review should be no more than two pages in length (double-spaced). Each article
review should contain the following:
Provide a full citation of the article. (Author, year, article title, journal name, volume number,
issue number, page numbers.) Be sure this is in correct APA format! Present the full citation first
at the top of the page. (Start a new page for each article review.)
Describe the problem presented in the article in your own words.
Summarize the article, describe the study and identify the major issues and conclusions.
Describe potential topics for future research based on the recommendations from the article.
Describe your reactions. State whether you agree or disagree with the author(s) findings and/or
conclusions, and explain why. Make sure you write your entire paper in third person narrative, (I,
me, we, our, us should not be used in the narrative.)
Provide a list of references (Reference List) at the end of each article that are of interest to you
and that you may want to read to gain better perspective on the ideas presented in the article.
(These sources are normally generated from the Reference List from the article you are
reviewing, although new ones may be attained also through your own literature search.)
Note: Please be sure that all 5 article reviews are contained in ONE file to be submitted
through Canvas!
