The Book of Daniel was written in the 2nd Century BCE when Jews were being persecuted by a Greek ruler named Antiochus Epiphanes. As with all books of the Bible, you’ll want to ask, “What was the ancient writer intending to communicate to the people the book was written to?” Why was the of the Book of Daniel using these stories to communicate to Jews at that time?
Start by reading the articles on “Daniel, Book of” in the Anchor Bible Dictionary (BS440 .A54 1992 in the reference section of the library)
It’s written by John J. Collins–one of the top scholars in the world on Daniel.
Again, remember to focus on what the author of Daniel (written in the mid second century BCE was trying to say to the people the book was written to who lived in Israel in the second century BCE and were being persecuted by Antiochus Epiphanes. So, also in the Anchor Bible Dictionary, you should read the section on “Antiochus IV Epiphanes” in the article titled, “Antiochus”. The article on the “Maccabean Revolt” might also be helpful.
Then look at the commentary on the Book of Daniel in this book in the reference section of the library:

Do not get sidetracked with books or articles that try to interpret the Book of Daniel as referring to things that are about to happen in the modern world. People who try to do this distort what the author of Daniel was trying to say and they totally misunderstand what the book was about.
